As you maybe aware the Red Cross reached out to the ARRL in an unprecedented request and asked for 50 amateur operators who could deploy to Puerto Rico.
An operator from the Hawaii has deployed in support of that mission, Bill Kollenbaum, KH7XS / K4XS of Laupahoehoe. Below is an email from Lloyd, KH6LC, letting us now about the deployment. Below that is an email from Holly, WH7YL, the wife of Bill KH7XS / K4XS, his wife I received this morning letting us know he is on the island of Culebra and is safe. He is expected to return to Hawaii on the 18th of October.
It is located approximately 17 miles east of the Puerto Rican mainland, 12 miles west of St. Thomas and 9 miles north of Vieques. Culebra is spread over 5 wards and Culebra Pueblo (Dewey), the downtown area and the administrative center of the city. Residents of the island are known as Culebrenses. With a population of 1,818 as of the latest census, it is Puerto Rico’s least populous municipality.
Thanks for this email from KH6LC.
I thought you might like to know that “one of our own” is currently working with the ARRL Relief effort in Puerto Rico.
Well known contester, Bill Kollenbaum, KH7XS / K4XS of Laupahoehoe is there for two weeks. Bill and his xyl Holly
were at their Florida condo when the request for help came and he volunteered to go.
That’s all I know at this point.
73 & Aloha,
Lloyd Cabral, KH6LC
This is Holly WH7YL, Bill’s wife. He is on the island of Culebra and safe…I am sure he will be happy to share his experiences when he gets back. He is supposed to be flying back out to HI on Oct 18, as long as he gets back from PR in time. If he doesn’t contact you after that time, send him another email, he gets sooooo many emails, I am trying to go through them and delete the junk, but it is easy for important ones to get lost.
